Helsinki is also the cultural, commercial and political centre of Finland. The principal manufacturing products include paper, textiles, liquors, china, chemicals, and metal goods. Helsinki is a very maritime city and is popularly called the daughter of the Baltic. Helsinki is the center of all government, business, culture and science-related activity in Finland. Its populace is educated and cultured, and its prestigious University of Helsinki is the nation's oldest and largest university.

Helsinki is a lively, green city. One-fourth of its area consists of parks. Helsinki is full of free performances, from concerts and stand-up comedy to theatres and clubs. Almost all museums offer free entry on certain weekdays and at certain times. Helsinki is Finland's administrative center and the center of Finnish cultural life and business activity. There is a large and varied collection of museums, galleries, and performance spaces in the city.

Helsinki is set apart from other big historical cities by two factors: the great physical presence of nature and the very clear grid pattern used to design the city's streets. Helsinki is nowadays the economic, administrative and cultural centre of Finland and has become increasingly cosmopolitan since Finland joined the European Union in 1995. Helsinki is located at 60 degrees north, having a cold winter but comparatively warm summer. There is a need for efficient heating of buildings in Helsinki.
